Few times ago we had shared a small utility, Universal USB Installer, which allows you to create a bootable USB from which you can install Linux into your computer.

Now here is another free and portable tool, Rufus, according to its developer it’s a quite fast tool as compared to other similar tools, and can do its job 2 times faster.

This utility will be great in following situations :-

  • Need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, etc.)
  • Need to work on a system that doesn’t have an OS installed
  • Need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
  • Want to run a low-level utility

As it’s a portable utility you need not to install it, just download and run the EXE file to get started with it.

Rufus

It comes in two versions, With FreeDOS and Without FreeDOS, Apart from the ability to select FreeDOS rather than the default Microsoft DOS, these versions are exactly the same. If you use a non-US keyboard, FreeDOS is recommended as it supports more more keyboard layouts. In both cases, if you choose DOS, Rufus will try to set the keyboard locale for you. If you use plan to use ISO images only, any version will do.
